Photographs 1991-1995
Born in 1966, Laurenz Berges graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as master student with Bernd Becher in 1996. This is the first book of this young and promising artist. Working in the tradition of Walker Evans social documentary photography, Laurenz Berges spent five years taking pictures in abandoned Russian barracks in the former GDR. One photograph from this series was recently shown in the New York Museum of Modern Art as part of the Walker Evans & Co. exhibition. Foregoing any symbolism or visual convention, solely trusting in the designing daylight. Berges searches in well-swept, scarcely furnished rooms for traces of those who left.
