Drawings and Portraits
est known for his Theatre of Cruelty, the work of French writer, actor, theater director, and draftsman Antonin Artaud (1886−1948) is a poetical explosion—force in full bloom. Abandoning visual arts in the mid-1920s in favor of writing and theatre, he resumed drawing in the 1940 during his stays in mental institutions. His first exhibition in Paris in 1947 caused a creative earthquake affecting the arts up to our time.
Artaud’s drawings, even more immediate and disconcerting than his writing and theater work, are permeated by the symptoms of his artistic genius and his illness: hallucinatory clairvoyance, magic-transcendent body consciousness, emotional and physical capacity of suffering.
In his unabated search for libratory expression as a curative agent against the world as it is, his art has not lost any of its relevance today.
